The Crown is a television show based on The Audience – an award winning play by Peter Morgan. This Netflix’s original drama follows the footsteps of the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the mid 40s to the present.

At the beginning of the series, we are given a look at the early reign of the queen, how she ascended to the throne at a tender age of 25, following the death of her father – King George VI. As time passes by, romances, personal intrigues, and political rivalries which played a huge role in shaping the events of the 20th century begin to be revealed.

  1. Narcos

If the name Pablo Escobar rings a bell in your head, then you will be pleased by this Netflix’s modeling of this infamous Medellin drug lord. Pablo Escobar was a Colombian kingpin who amazed great wealth through the sale of narcotics and other contraband from Colombia to the United States and Mexico. In the show, the story is told from Pablo’s point of view, with Brazilian actor Wagner Moura as Pablo and DEA Agent Steve Murphy as Boyd Holbrook on the other side, in what later on turns out to be an all-out war.

The show begins during the early days of drug battle, when the biggest offenders were those who were caught with a kilo of marijuana, and then it proceeds to the violent bloody battles between cartels fighting to control tones of kilos of Colombian coke and the drug agents from USA, Mexico and Colombia. Eventually, it is estimated that up to 4,000 were lost during the battles which lasted for about two decades.

  1. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the story of a 15 year old girl rescued from a cult, who decides to reclaim back her life by venturing into New York, not knowing what really lies ahead of her or the battles she will have to fight. While in New York, she decides to face life with wide-eye open enthusiasm, and despite her relatively tender age, she decides to rent a room from Titus, a Broadway wannabe actor, who makes a living as a street performer at Times Square.

The unlikely duo soon finds out that they can both help one another and Titus decides to introduce Kimmy back to modern life by first enthusing into her the inspiration that she should never give up. As a team, they are determined to make it through, irrespective of what life throws their way.

For those who love action shows, Luke Cage is another interesting television show by Netflix in 2016. The show first aired on 30th September, 2016 and it is an action packed drama that follows the evolution of Luke Cage. Luke Cage is a guy with immense strength and unbreakable skin which resulted from a sabotaged experiment.

When his relationship with Jessica Jones fails, Cage attempts to build a quiet life in New York. But his attempts to live a quiet life are thwarted when he finds himself pulled out of the shadows to fight for his city, where confronting his past life, which he tried to bury, becomes inevitable.

  1. House of Cards

House of Card is a Netflix original production featuring Francis Underwood, a US Rep for South Carolina as a ruthless politician out to seek revenge. Garrett Walker, a presidential aspirant promises Underwood the post of Secretary of State if he will help him ascend to the presidency. But just before the inauguration, Walker decides to change his mind and tells Underwood he is more valuable while serving in the congress.

From the outside, Underwood seems to accept the matching orders, but on the inside, he vows to bring Walker and all his allies down, with the help of his wife, who is an environmental activist. The show is based in the UK version with the same name, and the US version also offers a glimpse of the kind of greed and corruption that prevails in the American politics.

  1. Making a Murderer

In Making a Murderer, Steve Avery spends nearly two decades in a prison for a crime he did not commit. After being exonerated, Avery files a suit against all those involved with his arrest, but shortly after, he is put behind bars again, being accused of murdering Teresa Halbach, a 25 year old photographer, who was last seen in Avery’s property. Avery and his nephew are tried, found guilty and convicted of the crime.

Later on, Columbia graduate students Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi read about the Avery Story and thought that it could make a nice documentary. Netflix decided to take their concept and produced about ten episodes of the docuseries, which generated a lot of publicity leading to petitions to have Avery’s case reviewed.

  1. BoJack Horseman

This is a Netflix original television series which has been running since August 2014. It is the story of BoJack Horseman, a humanoid horse who decides to get lost in the sea of booze and self loathing, and later on decides after he’s got enough of all that, that maybe it is time for a comeback. Back in the 90s, the show used to be the hottest thing around, when BoJack was an adoptive father of three orphaned kids and was also once a star of the sitcom during that time. The show was however cancelled, only for it to reappear later, with BoJack wanting to regain his dignity.

With the help of a feline ex-girfriend who is now his agent, BoJack sets out on a quest to regain his dignity. But Hollywood has changed from what it used to be back in the days and it is not an easy to task to get used to stuff like Twitter if it is your first day. The show is laced with plenty of references to drugs, alcohol and sex, and thus not suitable for the little ones.

Daredevil is the first in a planned series of show by Netflix, giving out the details of the Marvel Universe. It is the story of Matt Murdock, a guy blinded by an accident as a child, who during the day practices as an attorney, but becomes a vigilante by night. Following the accident and the blindness, Murdock has heightened senses as a Daredevil with which he uses to fight crimes on the streets of New York ones the sun retires for the day.

Since he is an attorney and he is required to believe in the criminal justice system, Murdock has an altered ego and decides not to believe in the system, but instead take the law in his own hands to protect his neighborhood and the nearby communities. The show was directed by Steven K DeKnight and the earlier episodes are available on YouTube, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, and Amazon Video.

In this show, Piper Chapman seems to be having a relatively good life as a public relations executive and a fiancé, when suddenly life decides to take the wrong turn on her. Chapman is in her mid 30s and is sentenced to serve 10 years in a medium security prison due to her association with a with a drug runner. While in prison, she is forced to trade power suits for the prison orange, a venture that makes her wade her way through the stringent prison system. She adjusts to the life in prison, and even makes friends many unusual, eccentric and unexpected persons she meets behind bars.

  1. Stranger Things

And number one on the list of the top 10 best TV show on Netflix in 2016 is Stranger Things. This is a thrilling Netflix original drama featuring award winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers. Joyce’s son, who is 12 years old, goes missing and she, together with the local authorities launches a terrifying investigation into the disappearance of the child.

As the investigation takes shape and their search for answers intensify, they unearth a series of strange mysteries about secret experiments being conducted by the government. The investigations also lead them to unraveling supernatural forces as well as a very unusual little whose details you can only find by watching the television show. The show is based on a story back in the 1980s, when science fictions shows still captivated the audiences.
